Lenehan on the cards

1 min read

FORMER Wonthaggi footballer Will Lenehan will fight before a huge TV audience against Olympian Callum Peters on Sunday, April 6, being on the undercard for Tim Tszyu’s bout against Joe Spencer, the daytime action taking place at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.

While Peters previously had slightly the better of Lenehan, Will’s coach Gerry Murphy stressed that was in an amateur encounter, explaining it will be a different scenario this time in the professional ranks.

“Will’s a harder puncher than Callum who is more of a rapid-fire puncher,” he said, noting Peters likes to punch on the move whereas Lenehan sets his feet and delivers more power shots.

The bout is over five rounds as opposed to three in the amateurs and punches that land will be felt more acutely due to the nature of the gloves used, thin and just 10 ounces as opposed to the thicker amateur gloves.

It is the second professional contest for both fighters, Peters vastly more experienced in the amateur ranks.

Lenehan made the move to Melbourne to train with Murphy, going on to win the Victorian title in the amateurs, and went to the Olympic trials in 2023.

While the bout between Lenehan and Peters has only been locked in for a couple of weeks, Murphy said Will has been training hard anyway, the coach having a philosophy of ensuring his fighters are ready when an opportunity presents itself.
