A PLAQUE was unveiled on the wall of the Wonthaggi Plaza Arcade today to commemorate the men from Wonthaggi who fought and died in the Battle of Waitavolo, 80 years ago.
This spot in Graham Street was chosen for the plaque as it was once the Crystal Palace Picture Theatre which had a large space where soldiers paraded, and it was home to the first RSL club.
President of the Wonthaggi RSL, Kevin Walsh served together with Captain Gary Simmons in the 1st Battalion, the Royal Victorian Regiment, which carried the Battle Honour Waitavolo as the Custodian of the Battle Honours of the 14/32nd Battalion. Both men shared some of the history with attendees.
The ceremony was completed by the sound of the bugle playing The Last Post and a minutes' silence.
