NEWHAVEN College students and staff have been enthusiastically preparing for their 2023 musical production of Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’.

This timeless story of love, acceptance, sacrifice, and redemption has captured the hearts and imaginations of audiences young and old for generations.

‘The Little Mermaid’ tells the story of Ariel and her journey to find true love and acceptance and Head of Theatre Lauren White says, “we hope to inspire our audience to follow their dreams and embrace their own unique identities.”

From the stunning set designs and intricate costumes to the powerful musical numbers and heartfelt performances, every detail of this production has been carefully crafted to create a truly immersive experience for each audience.

As a classic fairy-tale originally written by Hans Christian Andersen and then reimagined into the beloved Disney animated classic, Director Lauren White is finding it a “joy to be able to direct this beautiful, magical production.

“We have a cast of 55 students between the ages of 13-18 years old who have worked tirelessly on their lines since the end of last year and they began rehearsals three times a week from the beginning of February.”

“We have several students who are collectively working behind the scenes in costume, stage set-up and hair and make-up and our musical director Matthew Goss will direct an orchestra that is inclusive of some of our very talented musical students.

“Our art and textiles teacher Fiona Anastasi together with volunteer Robyn Rumbelow have altered each and every costume for the cast and ex drama teacher from Cowes Primary School has generously volunteered her time to create every stage prop,” said Lauren.

Year 10 student Cecily de Gooyer, through her performance as Ariel, hopes that the audience will connect with the messages that the show conveys including the importance of selflessness, forgiveness, and the true meaning of love.

Prince Eric will be performed by year 12 student Lucas White who will highlight the narrative of staying true to others whilst being true to yourself.

“I encourage everyone to come along and immerse themselves in the young talent of these performers, because they deserve a full audience at every show.”

Four shows are being held at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre from Friday May 5 to Sunday May 7.
