TULLY Fletcher, federal Labor candidate for Monash, has announced South Gippsland Shire Council will receive $2.4 million to reopen the Leongatha South bypass.
The investment will fund delivery of the new Simons Lane intersection with the Bass Highway at a safer location further north, closer to Leongatha.
The new Simons Lane intersection with the Bass Highway will incorporate dedicated turn lanes, road pavement improvements and lighting.
This $2.4 million investment has been awarded to South Gippsland Shire by Catherine King, Federal Labor Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, under the Australian Government's Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.
“The Albanese Government is committed to delivering the funding local councils need to improve road safety, allowing more money to be spent on projects and less on administration."
Tully Fletcher, Federal Labor Candidate for Monash, said, “The Leongatha South bypass at Simons Lane is an important link between the Bass and South Gippsland Highways and upgrading this bypass has been an important local priority for years.
“This investment will help South Gippsland Shire manage and plan for better heavy vehicle and highway traffic movement through and around Leongatha.
“I learned to drive on the Bass Highway as a student at Leongatha Secondary College. Now, as a local dad of two and our federal Labor candidate, I’m really pleased to be doing my part to make the Bass Highway safer for everyone in and around Leongatha.
“20 years of Liberals and independents haven’t delivered for Monash, and they won’t deliver. This investment shows the difference hard work and effective federal representation can make to our communities. I’ve promised to get things done for Monash as part of the federal Labor team, and I’m already delivering.”
With $200 million available each year, the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program is part of the Albanese Labor Government’s commitment to strengthen investment and support the delivery of safer and more productive roads across Australia.
