A PLAQUE was unveiled on the wall of the Wonthaggi Plaza Arcade today to commemorate the men from Wonthaggi who fought and died in the Battle of Waitavolo, 80 years ago.
This spot in Graham Street was chosen for the plaque as it was once the union theatre which had a large space where soldiers paraded, and it was home to the first RSL club.
President of the Wonthaggi RSL, Kevin Walsh fought together with Captain Gary Simmons in the 14/32nd Battalion and both men shared some of their history with attendees.
The ceremony was completed by the sound of the bugle playing The Last Post and a minutes' silence.
