THERE was the sense of a new era in football when Meeniyan Dumbalk United took the field under new coach Rhett Kelly, with a substantially new line-up against Newborough in the Latrobe Valley on Saturday.
But Newborough apparently didn’t get the memo.
By half time in the match they had steadily built a significant lead in a low-scoring game, 7.4 to MDU’s 3.1 and they went on with it from there.
The Bulldogs looked intent on building on their promising season in the Mid Gippsland League last year when they finished fifth and won their first elimination final before bowing out to Foster in the semis.
With key forward Jack Robinson having a day out, kicking four by three quarter time, the home side got the difference out to 38 points and there was no coming back from there for the Demons.
