While Good Friday is a sacred day for Christians, in Victoria it is also a special occasion due to the crucial funds raised for the Royal Children’s Hospital, and now also regional paediatric health services, with plenty of opportunities around South Gippsland and Bass Coast Shires to contribute to the cause.
Sentinel-Times caught up with Leongatha Fire Brigade’s Louise Black and Nathan Hawkins this morning as they collected donations for the Good Friday Appeal while stationed at the traffic lights near The Salvation Army building, something they’ll continue until 12pm.
Louise, previously with Benalla Fire Brigade, has long been part of the fundraising effort on Good Fridays, this being her second time collecting in Leongatha.
She explained why she continues to volunteer her time.
Having young grandchildren, she is confident that should they need the Royal Children’s Hospital they will be in good hands.
“We need to support a hospital that cares for our young kids,” Louise said.
Nathan echoed that sentiment.
“It’s a good cause to help sick children in need,” he said.
While Louise expressed concern about the fact many people no longer carry cash, donations began to flow in during the short time this scribe was present.
