Drunk driver charged with Wonthaggi pedestrian’s death

THE 47-year-old driver charged with causing the death of a 68-year-old pedestrian in Wonthaggi last Sunday afternoon, March 2, was almost four times the legal limit when he allegedly crossed to the wrong side on Campbell Street and struck the woman and the dog she was taking for a walk.

The critically injured woman was taken to hospital by ambulance where she later died. The dog she was walking for a neighbour died at the scene.

The incident had its sequel in the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court on Monday, March 3 when Narre Warren man Sampath Jayasundara appeared to face three charges; one of culpable driving causing death, one of failing to stop after being involved in a fatal collision and another of failing to render assistance.

The court heard that Mr Jayasundara had a blood/alcohol reading of 0.19 at the time of the crash and was remanded in custody until his next appearance in court in July.

He did not apply for bail.
