THE Wonthaggi Croquet Club is having a very busy February, starting with six members travelling to Traralgon on the weekend of February 8 and 9 to compete in their level play singles tournament.
Tom Lacey tackled Section 1, where he won five games and finished third.
Mike Butterfield and Virginia Wheeler were seeded in Section 2 with Mike winning three games and Virginia two games.
Neil Warburton was the sole, and successful, entrant in Section 3 coming in the winner with six games.
Kathy Ross and Jo Butterfield completed the contingent competing in Section 4 with both winning four games.
This was equal with the runners up but just missing out on a hoops countback – well done all.
Tuesday, February 11, was the day of our internal Hi-Lo doubles tournament.
Playing partners were drawn out of the hat and this format makes for a fun competition.
This year’s winners were Stephen Wilbourne teaming up with associate member Terry Nash.
The following Tuesday the last of the Singles, Section 3, was contested with six players competing and Stephen Wilbourne coming up trumps.
A bit of a theme developing here.
The Memorial Shield is a competition held in honour and remembrance of all those members who have passed away since the inception of the club in May 1993.
This year it was held on Tuesday, February 25.
A long day with seven pairs competing but a great, well fought out competition.
The ultimate winners, winning all of their games, were Marj Prendergast and Neil Warburton, their names now forever engraved on the shield, with Sue Cartwright and Gerry Kool (five wins – one loss) as runners-up.
The days of the internal tournaments were broken up with a barbecue lunch and a thank you to the chefs on each of those days.
Thanks also to the tournament manager Sue Cartwright for keeping everyone on track during these events. Not an easy task.
Left only now is the President/Secretary’s challenge to be held shortly.
