THE 26th Cape Paterson Aquathon, a 400 metre swim and 4.4 kilometre road race, is to be held this Sunday, January 21 at 10am. The event is organised by the Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club (CPSLSC), with the swim held at Cape Paterson’s first surf beach and run through the cliff tops and into The Cape estate with the finish line the first surf carpark.
The Cape Paterson Aquathon is a popular local event and the first in The Bass Coast Series 2024.
CPSLSC president, Ray Rust said conditions on Sunday are predicted to be ideal, given the weather forecast and mid-tide.
“We are excited by the interest from the community in participating in this event, and I confidently predict the 26th event will have record numbers,” said Ray.
“There are many ‘regulars’ who return year after year and make the event an enjoyable day.”
Last year, despite a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, many competitors returned to participate and reconnect with each other.
“It felt like a celebration, and showcased the value such events for all involved,” says Karen Marangio, co-ordinating registration for the 26th time.
“It showcased this incredible community that consists of volunteers, entrants, spectators and sponsors who work together to create the friendly atmosphere on the days.”
This sustained support includes many locals, semi-permanent and holidaymakers from the Bass Coast Series and others from afar who simply enjoy ocean swimmers and runners. For example, Kirrily Zimmerman completed her 15th aquathon and Steve Hams chalked up his 10th consecutive aquathon last year.
“This year we are looking forward to Gary O’Connor, Cape Paterson local, 20th aquathon.”
“The event is our annual standout event, the key fundraiser, with funds raised going directly to life saving operations so that we can continue to safely patrol our beach,” said Ray.
Ray concludes “and we look forward to seeing you on the beach. Enter as an individual or a team or come down on the day to cheer and soak up the atmosphere.”
