SPONSORED by the Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club, the Wonthaggi Croquet Club held its annual level play singles tournament on the weekend of November 23 and 24.
Players from several Gippsland clubs, Mornington, Monash, Bendigo, Sorrento and Rosebud Village Glen took part in two sections.
Four games were played on Saturday in hot, windy and very trying conditions with three games to finish off the tournament on Sunday in rainy weather until around lunchtime.
Despite these varying conditions, some terrific croquet was on show over the weekend.
The weekend was broken up with dinner at the Workmen’s on the Saturday evening.
In Section 2, two Bendigo players – as it happens, husband and wife – came away with the honours.
Sandra Volk won six out of seven and Greg Hicks with five out of seven finished runners-up.
In Section 1, David Budge from Monash, with five wins +4 hoops was pipped into second place by John Carr from Mornington with five wins +8 hoops – well played all.
Once again, events like this cannot function without the assistance of club members prior to and during the event.
A working bee several days before had the courts and
surrounds looking fantastic which attracted many favourable comments during the weekend.
Sue Baker and many helpers manned the kitchen ensuring everyone was well looked after throughout the weekend.
Sue Cartwright with her apprentice Stephen Wilbourne did a great job managing the tournament, Tom Lacey refereeing, and Michael Barber and Gerry Kool timekeeping.
Bert Orr waded his way expertly through the raffle.
A special mention must go to the Paint Place, who for many years now, have kept the club supplied with line marking paint.
