Newhaven College Students raise nearly $12,000 for Cancer Council

2 min read

EACH year, Newhaven College Year 12 Leadership selects a charity for the College to support. This year, Cancer Council was chosen on reflection of the impact cancer has on our lives.  The Year 12 Leadership team led the College community to raise $11,931 for Cancer Council and were thrilled with the participation and enthusiasm from students, staff and parents right across the school. This was the largest amount raised in College fundraising history, so the Captains were very pleased.

The whole school community enjoyed participating in the fundraising, with dress-up days, a Junior School disco, trivia night, raffles and a College staff cake baking competition.

At the Year 12 final assembly, 2024 College Captains Max Arceo, Alice Mabilia, Tom Bird and Tahlia Williams presented a cheque to Cancer Council representative, and longtime parent of Newhaven College, Kelly Fuery.

On accepting the cheque at the College assembly, Kelly Fuery said, “I know that selecting Cancer Council Victoria as this year’s charity was a deeply personal choice for many students in the Year 12 leadership team, so I extend a heartfelt thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity. This gift will help fund much-needed cancer research, it will help educate and inform the community about how we can all help prevent cancer, and it will help ensure that no cancer patient, or their friends or their family, go through a cancer journey alone.

“So, a huge thank you to all college students, staff, families and the extended Newhaven community for all of your hard work to raise this incredible amount. You should be really proud; Cancer Council Victoria is truly grateful, and I am extremely proud of you all.”

Principal Mr. Tony Corr expressed his admiration for this year's fundraising efforts, stating, "Our Year 12 student leaders chose the Cancer Council as the College charity for 2024 because our school community has been profoundly affected by cancer. They were eager to support an organisation that strives to reduce the impact of cancer on everyone. I am incredibly impressed and proud of our students' dedication to fundraising in such a meaningful area. They deserve to be congratulated."

The College would like to congratulate the 2024 Year 12 Leadership team. They showed dedication, determination and exceptional leadership skills to produce such a fantastic result. Fundraising for 2025 will be decided by the incoming Year 12 Leadership team early next year.
