The Kilcunda brigade fundraiser at Ocean View Hotel

2 min read

IN the picturesque town of Kilcunda, a new chapter for community engagement is unfolding, thanks to a dynamic partnership between the Kilcunda CFA Brigade and the Ocean View Hotel, affectionately known as 'The Killy Pub.'

Under the enthusiastic ownership of Brett Crellin and Paula Doody, who took over earlier this year, locals’ nights have been transformed into lively monthly events that bring residents together to support their firefighters and enjoy local music.

Paula Doody expressed the hotel team’s pride in supporting the dedicated volunteers of the Kilcunda CFA, who play a crucial role in ensuring the community’s safety. “It’s our way of giving back to our vital volunteers,” Paula shared. “We want to create a space where locals can come together, enjoy a meal, and engage with each other and the CFA in a relaxed environment.”

Captain David Wingfield of the Kilcunda CFA echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude for the support from Brett and Paula. “Their commitment to fostering community bonds is invaluable,” he said. “This fundraiser not only provides a fun night out but also offers a platform for locals to ask fire-related questions they might not otherwise have the chance to address.”

The impact of these locals’ nights has been tangible. With funds raised from the monthly raffles, the Kilcunda CFA recently purchased new UHF radios to improve communication during operations. “These radios are essential for keeping all our members connected, especially during emergencies,” Wingfield noted. The brigade has plans to acquire even more radios to ensure comprehensive communication among all volunteers.

Moreover, the monthly event serves as an informal gathering for community engagement, helping to recruit new members for the CFA. As interest grows, the brigade has witnessed an increase in community involvement and pride, all thanks to the positive shift brought about by the new management at the Ocean View Hotel.

As locals come together to enjoy good food, drinks, and live music, they also contribute to a cause that enhances the safety and unity of their beloved community. The collaboration between the Kilcunda Brigade and the Ocean View Hotel stands as a testament to the power of community spirit and the importance of supporting those who protect and serve.

So, mark your calendars for the last Friday of every month—join your neighbours at The Killy Pub, indulge in a hearty meal, participate in the raffle, and strengthen the bonds that make Kilcunda a wonderful place to live. Together, you can continue to build a resilient and connected community, ensuring that the Kilcunda CFA remains strong and ready to serve.
