Early detection saves lives

1 min read

I READ with interest your article celebrating the 30th anniversary of Breast Screen Gippsland in the November 5, SGST edition. As one of the 140 women diagnosed with breast cancer by this service this year I cannot applaud their work more strongly.

My breast cancer (invasive lobular carcinoma) is not the kind that makes a lump, and I have no family history of breast cancer so without this incredibly important service my cancer would not have been detected until it was too late for me.

Instead, I have a full chance of survival after treatment.

While no one wants to receive a cancer diagnosis I felt cared for and supported through every step of my diagnosis. We are indeed lucky to have this incredibly valuable service in our district.

Thank you to the wonderful Breast Screen Gippsland staff for your amazing work – and thank you SGST for shining a light on this important work.

A final note for those of you reading this; please keep up with your regular mammograms, early detection may just save your life – like it did mine.
