Light plane flips in emergency landing on French Island

A LIGHT plane, on route from the Tooradin Airport to French Island has flipped upside down during an emergency landing on the island at 2.20pm on Saturday, January 21, 2023.

The pilot of the two-seater plane, a man aged in his 60s, has been treated for lacerations and a leg injury.

According to police, the plane was carrying a pilot and one passenger and flipped after attempting a landing on an airstrip on the island just before 2.30pm.

“One person was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” said police.

“The exact cause is not known at this stage. ATSB (Australian Transport Safety Bureau) have been notified and will investigate.”

ATSB is the lead agency.

One of the occupants was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

The plane was a Van's RV-9A (registration VH-JXN), an American-made two-seat, single-engine, low-wing kit plane.
