Phillip Island Boardriders Club Longboard 2 Competition

2 min read

ON Saturday, November 16, the Phillip Island Boardriders Club (PIBC) hosted their Longboard 2 competition for the 2024/25 season at the renowned Crazy Birds surf break. The event was expertly coordinated by Longboard Coordinator Nala Taylor, with the support of the PIBC Longboard subcommittee, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable day for all competitors.

The 2024/25 Longboard format allowed all competitors, regardless of age or gender, to surf two heats each. Athletes’ best two waves from their respective heats were added to four waves total, with the winners announced at the end of the day. This inclusive approach provided a fun and competitive atmosphere where surfers of all levels could showcase their skills and socialise and surf with everyone across the club.

A key element of the competition was the emphasis on surfing etiquette. Competitors were reminded to respect priority rules: the surfer positioned furthest out the back and for the longest time has the choice of wave and direction. Additionally, clear communication was encouraged, with surfers required to verbally announce whether they intended to ride left or right on any given wave.

In true PIBC fashion, the competition wasn’t just about surfing. Each competitor who participated in a heat was also required to judge a heat, ensuring that everyone contributed to the event. In addition, all participants helped set up and pack down the PIBC marquee and competition equipment, maintaining the club’s spirit of community and collaboration.

Treasurer Joanna O'Reilly Stubbs stated, "It was a magic day spent with a great community, at a great location."

PIBC would like to thank photographers Peter Fogarty @peterfogartyphotography, Craig Anderson @craigando2, Andrew Lidsey (Bunny) @bunpix, and PIBC Treasurer Joanna O'Reilly Stubbs @joanna_oreilly_stubbs for their photography of the event.
