70-YEAR-OLD Frank Hirst from the Strzelecki Lions Club is taking on the Lions Club District 201 V3 Ride for Sight from May 2 to 5. The charity cycling event will run over four days, with cyclists training to ride a total of 290 kilometres, and Frank said he aims to raise $3000.
Frank admits that although the ride sounds exciting, he’s on a weekly training program and it’ll be hard work.
“So far, I’ve cycled 120 kilometres in training, but I need to ride 290 kilometres over four days,” said Frank.
“I’ve wanted to do this ride for a while now, and turning 70, I thought I needed to commit to it.
“The Strezleki Lions Club have been incredibly supportive.”
A truly community-driven event, the ride aims to raise funds for the Lions Club, Ride for Sight. This year, the proceeds will support the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) and a new treatment for macular degeneration.
“The treatment aims to provide an alternative to the painful monthly injections traditionally required for managing the condition,” said Frank.
For those interested in supporting the cause, donations can be made directly to the Ride for Sight charity or through Frank’s online donation page. Supporting a worthy cause, which Frank said is affecting many people around him, he is personally pushing his physical limits and joining the 31st annual ride for the Lions Eye Health Program for ongoing research into preventing blindness.
Visit Ride for Sight campaign is rolling! 31st Lions Ride for Sight 2025 to donate and support Frank in supporting others.
